About Kang Ning

My Full Biography

Singaporean composer Lim Kang Ning started composing at the age of 19 under the guidance of Tan Kian Wee. While at King’s College London, she received her Bachelors of Music degree with first-class honours and her Masters of Music (Composition) degree under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Keeley, Dr. Edward Nesbit and Prof. Silvina Milstein. As of July 2025, Kang Ning has completed her PhD programme in composition at the University of Bristol with Prof. John Pickard.

She decided to pursue composition as she is deeply interested in unravelling the threads that weave music together. Her compositional style focuses on the synthesis of melodic and timbral parameters; approaching musical material through a painterly and sculptural lens to create expressions that suggest music exceeding the two-dimensionality of the score.

Kang Ning’s compositions have been performed in Singapore, United Kingdom, Japan and the United States. In 2023, her piece for brass band, Syzygy, was a finalist for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain Composition Competition. Her chamber septet, April Light, was premiered at the Manhattan School of Music in 2024. Most recently, Dreams of Dondang Sayang, a duo for harp and marimba received its world premiere at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo. In 2025, Kang Ning’s orchestral piece, Oasis, received its world premiere at the University of Bristol’s Victoria Rooms with the University of Bristol Symphony Orchestra.
